1934-header.jpg

The 1933-34 season was Port Vale's highest finish in the second tier until the John Rudge era. However, perhaps even more disappointingly, the club blew their chances of making the first division – a feat it has still failed to achieve. This is one of the longer historical pieces on OVF - I hope it's interesting and shows just how close Vale were to getting into the first division all those years ago.

  • robf changed the title to OVF feature: The crazy end to Port Vale’s 1933-34 season...

One thing I couldn't verify for this feature was Wikipedia says that Fred Mitchesen's hat-trick took just three minutes. Then again, Wikipedia also says it was on his debut.

In the Sentinel archives the match report disputes the second fact (it says it was his second game) but the report gives no indication of how quickly he scored his three goals. If it was in three minutes, then that's remarkable.

If anyone knows any other sources of Port Vale news from 1934 (a slim hope I know) and any way of verifying the fact that would be great. I'm reluctant to take the Wikipedia entry as fact as they've already got one thing wrong about the game (not his debut).

p.s. By the way match reporting in the 30's was dreadful. Most of the reports are drenched in cliches and the basic facts (score, times of goals, attendance) are often missing.
