Starter for ten. This was a few months ago so Southgate's record is now worse than this after failing to beat Brazil and Belgium since.

How many of this were competitive games?

I'm surprised jack Grealish has been left out of the final squad, he played crucial passes for two of England's goals vs Bosnia & H. Just the type of payer who could have unlocked Iceland and no doubt unlock the defensive approach some teams will take against the 3 lions in Germany in 2024.

Just got back from a "Culture trip" to Berlin, the whole area around the Brandenberg Gate is a mess. On one side the fan zone(s) is being built, the other side where the US and UK embassies are, temporary buildings/stands to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the US/UK airlift to Berlin are being dismantled.

Because Allardyce was on the fiddle.

They could have given it to somebody who'd been in charge of a football team before and had at least a little success though surely?

Roy is the guy who failed to get the team out of the groups stage at the 2014 World Cup despite having the likes of Gerard, Lampard and Rooney at his disposal. He had Harry Kane taking corners in Euro 2016 and lost to Italy on pens in the quarters. How about Graham Taylor, who, when were desperate for a goal against Sweden in the 1992 Euros, took Gary Lineker off - we failed to get out of the groups stage having managed no wins and one goal in three games. The least said about Steve McLaren the better.

if you think Southgate is worse than any Of those three then I accept your right to hold that opinion and I trust you will accept mine to doubt your sanity.

Hodgson was rubbish but he never had the players at his disposal of the quality that we now have.  That world cup Gerrard was 34 and Lampard 35 and both on the way down, not the world class players that they were a few years before.  We had the likes of Jagielka, Smalling and Jones at the back, when needing goals we were bringing on the likes of Welbeck and Lambert.

I felt for Hodgson a bit as England manager, he lost the plot undoubtedly after the Russia draw in that tournament.  He seems a decent bloke and done some very good jobs with unfancied teams(Fulham, West Brom, Palace in the prem) yet whenever he's had that "bigger" role made a bit of a fudge of it.

Roy far superior.

McLaren has got me pondering I'll grant you. He's down there with Capello and Southgate.

Taylor was before my time really.

Taylor was won of the best English managers we have seen in this generation but he was hopeless for England but I do feel that was a lot down to the press crucifying him as they loved Venables, his predecessor who I personally think was naff. It is as important when you are England manager to win the press over and the public as it is to be a good manager.

Mclaren had huge success at Middlesbrough where Southgate was a failure but as an England manager McLaren was pretty naff.

Southgate was the manager of the U21 team and had an excellent record with them. Managed over 30 games and only lost 3.

Yet he still had Harry Kane taking corners!!

Taylor’s managerial win rate is worse than Southgate’s and he had a reputation for long ball football. McLaren was successful at Boro by winning the League Cup but he was bankrolled by Steve Gibson and the Boro fans were quite pleased to see the back of him.

I am in no way suggesting that Southgate is some sort of managerial maestro but I do believe some of the criticism of him on this thread is way over the top. There are plenty of England managers who have achieved less than him in the role.
