Euro 2024

Awful, disjointed, England performance lacking in confidence, creativity and drive. I've never seen a football team play so much at walking pace and pass backwards when in possession of the ball. All these issues fall at the feet of Southgate, who as a manager has never won anything in his life and it shows massively.

I read the other day that his win % against the top 10 teams is 22% (6 wins from 27 games), not checked this but it sounds about right to me. Hence I would anticipate from what I've seen so far we'll stumble through the group stages and most probably be KO'd against first major footballing nation we meet.

Paradoxically that point likely gets England through to the KO stages but I've reigned in my expectation of England winning this tourney even more as it's same old under Southgate, a boring, risk averse person whose teams play in just the same manner.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt against Serbia, but this was unacceptable.

What perplexes me is the half hearteness of it all. I lost count of the number of lazy passes that came up short, or players not coming to the ball and someone nipping in front of them. Also, what's been worked on in training? Why does no one know whether to press or not. I bet Denmark couldn't believe how easy it was.

As good as Bellingham was the other night, he was horrific tonight. I think the hype of England's best player went to his head as he consistently tried to do too much and lost the ball.

Why on earth are we 'experimenting ' with AA in the middle of a tournament. He's clearly not a midfielder. The Danes, who are nowhere near as technically gifted as say the Spanish just zipped it around our half hearted attempt at a press.

Kane put in zero effort and kept dropping so deep he was virtually playing as a centre half. I'm not sure playing in the German league has helped him, as it's pretty awful bar about 4 teams....there's a lot of easy games for Bayern.

Let's hope we finish 2nd in the group, meet Germany and get pumped. That way we'll at least get a new manager in.

His win rate in the prem with Middlesbrough was 25%. He should not have got the job in the first place. Talented bunch of players coached poorly and no winning mentality. Southgate/Holland out now.

Pickford

Walker Stones Guehi Trippier

Rice Bellingham

Saka Foden Palmer/Eze/Gordon

Kane

Sadly the defence has limited options with the left back situation astonishing. Trippier has not once overlapped and put a ball in.

Play 3 behind Kane where we have an embarrassment of riches with Foden as the 10.

Need Shaw in ASAP to balance that left side, would get Gordon in, move Jude into Trent's place and Foden number 10. Just balance it and play best players in their positions.

It was like the Crosby Vale side of last season, passing with no incision.

1st game - played poor because ‘we needed to conserve energy’

2nd game - it’s because we haven’t got a replacement for ‘Kalvin Phillips’

He needs sacking. He’s utterly clueless

He’s coming out with some crap ain’t he! 😂

Gordon deserves a run out 👍🏻 so does palmer but then we’d have to drop Foden, as Saka has done alright so far. I wouldn’t be against Foden coming off the bench next game & letting Palmer & Gordon cook. Kane needs to do more too he’s been non existent these first two games! As good as Foden is he’s not been at it so far, nobody should be given a free hit. We have other attacking options who will be eager to impress

It wasn't good last night and needs improving fairly quickly.

We lack any form of control in midfield and any pace in behind. Bring Wharton and Gordon in and I think we look a fair bit better. I don't think Southgate is explicitly instructing them to 'drop deeper', or perhaps everyone is lying as he actually is - in my view, its partly psychological and partly a lack of control of the middle, which he needs to sort.

We're effectively guaranteed to make the knockouts and will have a favourable draw in the RO16. I think we can pretty much expect to reach the Quarter Finals - from there, it's 3 tight, cagey knockout games decided by moments of brilliance/madness.

I'm not quite at the level of nuclear fallout that most are. Often the teams that win the tournaments don't start the hottest. I'm sure Argentina and Portugal fans were just as despondent as us at this stage in 2022 and 2016. Spain and Germany have set the standard but we have the Slovenia game and probably the RO16 to make a few changes and get it right. I still think we lost the final to Germany.

Here's a thought that's going through my head this morning...

Are these superb players, actually only superb thanks to the top notch foreign talent they play alongside for their clubs?

Bellingham is excused from this - genuine class.

Second thought - most of these tired players, play a high press game mostly twice weekly throughout the year. And yet our management uniquely think its not possible to do this in a tournament?
